What are the advantages of choosing a differential for your adult tricycle?

Key Takeaways

Without a differential, pedaling force is transmitted to only one rear wheel, which can cause the tricycle to veer off course on inclines or under effort.

The differential distributes power between the two rear wheels and allows for tight U-turns in both directions.

All Damius tricycles are equipped with a differential as standard, with no optional extras or additional cost.

This is particularly useful on hilly terrain, for heavier riders, and for anyone seeking a stable and precise ride.

The differential is a component that has always been found in cars, but few adult tricycle manufacturers actually include it as standard. Here’s what it’s for, why it changes daily riding, and why we chose to include it across the entire Damius range.

What Happens Without a Differential

On a tricycle without a differential, only one of the two rear wheels is driven. The other spins freely, receiving no power. In casual use on flat terrain, this often goes unnoticed. However, as soon as the effort increases, for example on an uphill climb, or when the rider pushes hard on the pedals, the unbalanced thrust between the two wheels tends to cause the tricycle to veer to the side opposite the driven wheel.

This is not inherently dangerous: a turn of the handlebars is enough to compensate. But it is a constant, uncomfortable constraint, more pronounced for heavier individuals or those riding on hilly terrain. One must constantly correct the trajectory instead of simply riding.

The other practical limitation: without a differential, tight U-turns are only possible in one direction, on the side opposite the driven wheel. Maneuvering in a confined space, a narrow alley, a garage, or a supermarket aisle quickly becomes tedious.

What the Differential Changes

The differential is a mechanism placed between the two rear wheels, within the drivetrain. Its role is to distribute driving force independently to each wheel, constantly adapting to their respective rotation speeds. When turning, the outer wheel travels a greater distance than the inner wheel: the differential allows them to rotate at different speeds without one blocking the other.

The result is immediately noticeable. Steering remains stable even when pedaling hard. The tricycle maintains its course on climbs without constant correction. And tight U-turns become possible in both directions, with the handlebars turned 90°, which significantly improves maneuverability in confined spaces.

Jean-Pierre, 74, living in Ardèche, told us that the difference was most noticeable on descents and uphill turns. Before choosing Damius, he had tried another tricycle without a differential: “On every hill, I had to hold the handlebars to avoid veering off. With the Evasion, it doesn’t budge.”

For Whom It Is Particularly Important

The differential is useful for everyone, but even more so in certain specific situations. People living in hilly terrain feel its benefit from the very first rides: hills are managed better, the trajectory remains straight, and effort is better transmitted to the ground. For someone living in Provence, the Cévennes, or inland Brittany, this is not a minor detail.

Heavier cyclists also have a greater interest in having one. The greater the weight to be moved, the greater the force exerted on the pedals, and the more pronounced the imbalance between the two wheels becomes without a differential.

Finally, for tricycles equipped with a mid-drive motor, such as our Evasion Evo with its 95 Nm Bafang M510 motor, the differential is not optional: it is essential. All motor power passes through the rear drivetrain, and without a differential to distribute it, riding would be difficult to control. This is why it is integrated as standard on this model, as on all others.

Standard on all Damius tricycles

We have chosen to equip all our models with a differential without exception. The Essentiel, Essentiel Fatbike, Evasion, and Evasion Evo all come with it as standard, with no optional extras or additional cost. This is not universal in the industry: some manufacturers offer it as a paid option, others do not offer it at all.

Our reasoning is simple. The differential improves riding in all situations, even the most mundane. There is no good reason to reserve it for a particular user profile. Someone who uses their tricycle only in the city on flat terrain may not have an urgent need for it, but they will not be inconvenienced by it either. On the other hand, someone living on hilly terrain who does not yet know at the time of purchase that they would need it will be very glad to have it.
