Key Points
• The torque displayed on a mid-drive motor is measured at the motor output, before the transmission. The actual torque at the wheel depends on the gear engaged.
• A hub motor acts in direct drive. Its torque is available immediately, without depending on the gear selected with the derailleur.
• The mid-drive motor incorporates a torque sensor: the assistance varies according to the force applied to the pedals. This requires effort, even minimal, that is constant and regular.
• Damius hub motors (Essentiel, Essentiel Fatbike, Evasion) operate with a simple pedaling sensor: the assistance is freely adjustable, independent of the effort provided.
• In France, the nominal power is limited to 250W to operate without a license or registration.
Mid-Drive Motor or Hub Motor: Why the Debate Is More Complicated Than It Appears
On the internet, the answer seems clear-cut: the mid-drive motor is better because it delivers more torque. This is true in some cases. It is false in others. And on an adult tricycle used by people who are primarily seeking simplicity, the question deserves to be asked differently. We will try to set the record straight, because we regularly receive customers who have read electric bicycle comparisons and arrive convinced that a mid-drive motor is necessarily superior. It is not that simple.
Mid-Drive Motor Torque: What You Are Not Always Told
A mid-drive motor is positioned at the bottom bracket, in the center of the tricycle. Its power passes through the chain before reaching the rear wheel or rear wheels in the case of a tricycle. This path through the transmission has an important consequence: the torque at the motor output is multiplied by the gear ratio engaged, via the derailleur or other type of transmission (Nexus, gearbox, etc.). In a low gear or on a climb, a mid-drive motor can indeed deliver significantly higher torque to the wheel. This is what makes the mid-drive motor particularly effective on steep hills, but be careful IF and only IF the correct transmission ratio is selected. In other words, if you approach a climb with the wrong gear selected, both the motor and you will struggle considerably, and the power and torque delivered to the wheels will be quite low, making the climb difficult. For a steep slope, it is better to slow down, select an easy gear, and tackle the climb more slowly, but with ease.
But there is another characteristic rarely mentioned in comparisons: the mid-drive motor operates with a torque sensor. This sensor measures the force you apply to the pedals and modulates the assistance accordingly. When you pedal hard, the assistance is strong. When you pedal lightly, it is weaker. This is what gives that natural feeling of effort extension, appreciated by active cyclists.
On an adult tricycle, this operation is not always suitable. If you have joint pain, if you are tired, or if you simply want to let yourself be carried, the torque sensor will interpret your light pedaling as a signal of low need. The motor will do less at the moment when you may need it most, and the motor’s maximum torque, in other words its power, will not be fully delivered. So even though you may have a powerful motor, depending on the effort you are able to provide, the motor may only deliver part of its power.
At Damius, we have developed motor settings specific to tricycle use and our clientele that allow maximum motor power even with limited effort. That said, even minimal, effort is essential and must be constant. We have found that this type of electric assistance (mid-drive motor) is not suitable for people with jerky pedaling or for people with very limited physical capacity in terms of strength and/or endurance.
The Hub Motor: A Different Logic, Designed for Real Use
The hub motor is integrated directly into the front wheel hub. It acts in direct drive, without a chain, without intermediate transmission. The stated torque is therefore the actual torque available at the wheel, immediately. Unlike two-wheeled bicycles on which the motor is preferably placed in the rear wheel, on a tricycle, the motor is preferably placed in the front wheel, as the motor stabilizes the tricycle by “pulling” it forward. This placement also allows for shorter tricycles because there are no risks of wheelie that can occur on tricycles whose motor power is transmitted to the rear wheels.
On Damius tricycles equipped with a hub motor (the Essentiel, Essentiel Fatbike, and Evasion), the system operates with a simple pedaling sensor. This sensor detects whether you are pedaling or not. As soon as you pedal, the assistance activates according to the selected level. The power delivered is what you have chosen on the display, regardless of the effort you provide. Whether you pedal hard or lightly, you get the same level of assistance; the motor delivers the power you want.
For someone who wants to maintain mobility without getting tired, this operation is often more suitable. You set the assistance level once, and the tricycle operates at that level as long as you pedal. No variability related to your physical condition at the moment.
The Damius 2026 Range Models
Damius offers four electric assist tricycles: 3 hub motor models (Essentiel, Essentiel Fatbike, Evasion) and 1 mid-drive motor model (Evasion Evo). Here is what you need to know about each of them.
The Essentiel: BAFANG 45 Nm Hub Motor, the Accessible Entry-Level Model

The Essentiel is equipped with a BAFANG 45 Nm hub motor with simple pedaling sensor. The assistance is adjustable among 5 levels on the color LCD display, independent of the effort provided. Standard 36V / 417 Wh battery for approximately 40 km range, standard differential and classic derailleur. Available in metallic gray, one size only, for people from 1.50 m to 1.90 m. Rated 4.8/5 on 22 reviews. Price: €2,490.
The Essentiel Fatbike: The Same Foundation, with Extra-Wide Tires
The Essentiel Fatbike uses exactly the same technical foundation as the Essentiel, including the BAFANG 45 Nm hub motor and simple pedaling sensor, with 20″ x 4.00 fat tires. These extra-wide tires better absorb ground irregularities and allow riding on soft terrain such as sand or gravel paths. Available in metallic gray. Price: €2,690.
The Evasion: BAFANG 45 Nm Hub Motor, the Range Best-Seller
The brand’s first model, the Evasion has won over thousands of customers since 2016. It is equipped with a BAFANG 45 Nm hub motor with simple pedaling sensor, differential, disc brakes, turn signals, horn, and standard frame lock. It features a very comfortable Nexus hub derailleur. The 36V / 417 Wh battery offers approximately 40 km range. Available in 2 sizes (20″ for 1.35 m-1.65 m, 24″ for 1.60 m-1.90 m) and 4 colors. Rated 4.7/5 on over 50 reviews. Price: €2,990.
The Evasion Evo: BAFANG 95 Nm Mid-Drive Motor, for Hilly Terrain
The Evasion Evo moves up in range with a BAFANG M510 mid-drive motor of 95 Nm coupled with a BAFANG automatic gearbox: the tricycle selects the appropriate gear itself according to your riding speed, without any intervention on your part. Compared to the Evasion, it moves into another category for hilly terrain: the multiplication through the transmission allows it to tackle hills that the hub motor handles with more difficulty under load. Its torque sensor requires maintaining constant effort on the pedals to obtain full assistance. Differential, turn signals, hydraulic disc brakes, and standard frame lock. Available in 2 sizes and 4 colors. Rated 4.7/5 on 21 reviews. Price: €3,790.
How to Choose According to Your Terrain and Riding Style
The first question is not “which motor is the most powerful” but “which motor corresponds to the way I want to use my tricycle.”
If You Are Primarily Seeking Simplicity and Comfort
The Evasion, with its hub motor and pedaling sensor, is the model that requires the least physical involvement to obtain constant assistance. You choose your level on the display, you pedal, the tricycle follows. This is the most frequent choice among people who are resuming the activity after a long break, or who have fragile joints or limited strength. The Essentiel responds to the same logic with identical motorization, at a more accessible price. And if your terrain is rocky or sandy, the Essentiel Fatbike with its wide tires will be more comfortable.
If You Live in a Hilly Area
An 8% grade over one kilometer is common in many French municipalities, particularly in mid-mountain areas. The Evasion’s 45 Nm hub motor handles most common hills. On longer or loaded slopes, you will feel the limit. The Evasion Evo and its 95 Nm mid-drive torque tackle these same hills with comfortable margin. The automatic gearbox selects the most suitable gear itself: you pedal, the rest is managed.
The nuance to keep in mind with the mid-drive motor: on climbs, you will naturally pedal harder. The torque sensor will detect this effort and increase the assistance proportionally. This is where the mid-drive motor best expresses its advantages.
The Regulations, in Brief
In France, an electric assist cycle must comply with a maximum nominal power of 250W and must not provide assistance beyond 25 km/h. These conditions allow operation on public roads and bicycle paths without a license, without registration, and without mandatory insurance. All Damius models are approved in this category.
Some manufacturers display higher peak power ratings. This figure corresponds to the motor’s maximum instantaneous power, permissible for only a few seconds. The nominal power, the one that legally counts, remains at 250W. The two figures sometimes coexist on technical specifications, which creates confusion. To determine whether a tricycle is legal on the road, it is the nominal power that counts, not the peak power.
If you are hesitating between the Evasion and the Evasion Evo, or if you are wondering which one corresponds to your terrain, Mathis and Charly can help you choose. You can also come and test the tricycles in Miramas, by appointment from Monday to Friday. The number is 04 90 59 49 10.
Mid-drive motor or hub motor, torque sensor or pedaling sensor: these choices have concrete consequences on the daily riding experience. The right model is not the one that displays the highest number on the technical specification sheet; it is the one that corresponds to your riding style, your terrain, and your habits.
